Carlos Cabo Ceramic Artistry
Carlos Cabo was born in Spain in 1951. While teaching was his main professional pursuit, his passion lay in artistic expression - painting, photography, and ceramics.
He started with photography, moved to painting, and now focuses on ceramics. Here, he feels most at ease, expressing creativity fluidly.
Cabo’s creative process is intuitive. Feelings and emotions guide him. He values both the tangible and intangible, real and imaginary.
Often, he begins with a simple volume, texture, or shape idea. Sometimes, he creates without reference, letting hands lead in improvisation.
Cabo views ceramics holistically. He enjoys collecting clay from the field. It’s a link to childhood and gives his pieces identity. Even living away from Spain, he does this when possible.
For finishing, he avoids engobes and industrial glazes. He uses pigments and terra sigillata from the field - collected clay. He prefers sigillata’s fine texture and velvety shine over commercial slips and glazes
